Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy — Is it Safe?

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy? Is it going to affect my baby? Can I get adjusted throughout the pregnancy? Do I have to have a problem in pregnancy to see a chiropractor? What is the Webster technique? I hear these and many other questions on a daily basis. The response to them is all positive.

Benefits of Chiropractic in Pregnancy

Chiropractic care during pregnancy is the safest, drugless, and non-invasive care you could have for both mom and baby. For example, sacroiliac misalignments can reduce space for the baby to grow and move, and this could be a reason why some women have babies in breech position. Chiropractic care doesn’t affect the baby, but it does sometimes help the baby with the space in the uterus.

All women should be checked for spinal misalignment at least once during pregnancy as well as get adjusted throughout the pregnancy. It reduces labor pain and time and reduces musculoskeletal pain throughout the entire pregnancy. In fact, it will boost your immune system to fight everyday viruses and bacteria. Research has shown positive outcomes after chiropractic care with women who previously had low back pain, dystocia during labor, fetal position changes, and much more.

Choosing the Right Chiropractor for Pregnancy

Practitioners who are certified in the Webster technique have a better understanding of the anatomy and changes occurring during pregnancy. The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic sacral analysis and diversified adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation/sacroiliac joint dysfunction. In doing so, neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis is improved.

Therefore, my recommendation is to find a practitioner who supports the natural birth process, and make regular chiropractic care a part of your prenatal choices. Midwives, doulas, healthy food choices, prenatal vitamins, and drinking water are other ways to support a healthy pregnancy. Birth is an amazing experience, and how you prepare throughout pregnancy along with who you work with will, in fact, lead to a more fulfilling birth experience. Stay healthy, stay active and get adjusted.
