Preparing for a Home Birth

So, you’re thinking about having a home birth? Great! Home births are an amazing way to bring your baby into the world. There are a few important things you’ll want to do to prepare for your home birth, though.

1. Find a Midwife

The first step in preparing for your home birth is finding a midwife. You want to make sure you find a midwife who is qualified and experienced in home births. You can ask your friends if they know of any good midwives, or you can look online. Moms groups are a great place to ask for referrals. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable with your midwife and that they make you feel confident about having a home birth.

2. Educate Yourself

It’s important that you educate yourself on what to expect during labor and birth and what comfort measure can help you through the process. This way, you can be prepared for anything that might happen. There are tons of great resources out there. You can read books, listen to podcasts, and take classes. A doula can the best investment in preparing for birth. Talk with you midwife for recommendations on resources that are right for you.

3. Stock up on supplies.

Before your due date, make sure you have everything you’ll need for the home birth itself as well as the first few weeks after baby arrives. You will get a list from your midwife with all the supplies you will need (like towels and trash bags) and how to order your birth kit , which has all of your disposables like gloves and gauze. You’ll also want to have plenty of food and drinks on hand so that you can stay nourished and hydrated throughout labor and those early days (or nights!) with a new baby.

4. Create a peaceful environment.

Once you’ve got everything gathered and organized, it’s time to start thinking about the ambiance of your home birth space. You’ll want it to be calm and relaxing so that both you and baby are comfortable during the birthing process. Consider dimming the lights, burning some candles, diffusing calming essential oils, and playing music. I like having two play lists: one that pumps you up and one for relaxing.

Preparing for a home birth doesn’t have to be daunting! By following these simple tips, you can make sure that both you and your baby are happy and healthy throughout the entire process. Start by finding a great midwife and she can help keep on track with the rest!
